7 Signs of True Love (and True Love Never Fades Nor Fakes)

The Person Who Truly Loves You Will Definitely Give You These 7 Things

How I Learned to Tell Real Love From Pretend Love: 7 Signs I Never Ignore

Hannah kim (as published on Medium.com)

Most of us have done it at least once. We make one person our whole world, while they quietly treat us as a habit, a deal or a way to pass the time. We call it love, but in reality it was only a show.

That is why the hardest question is also the simplest one. How do you know whether the person you share your time, your feelings and your life with truly loves you, or is only getting through the days?

I used to believe love meant big gestures, beautiful words and thoughtful gifts. Over time I learned that real love looks very different. A person who truly loves you gives you seven things that a pretender cannot keep up for long. And the seventh is so important that without it, the other six lose their meaning.

The first is real attention. In this fast world, the most valuable things we own are our time and our focus. If someone sits beside you with their eyes glued to their phone, you are in the room, but you are not their priority. I know the quiet loneliness of talking to someone who is somewhere else.

A person who truly loves you puts the world aside when they are with you. They do not only hear your words, they feel them. They ask questions, take interest in the small details of your day and make you feel that, in that moment, nobody on earth matters more to them.

The second is emotional safety and peace. For me this is the strongest proof of love, because it means you can be exactly who you are. You do not need drama or a mask to hide your feelings, your fears or your flaws. You are not afraid that one honest sentence will make them leave or laugh at you.

Someone who loves you creates a space where your mind can rest. If you are constantly confused, scared or full of doubt around a person, please remember that this is not love. It is emotional pain.

The third is respect for your self-worth and your boundaries. In my view, respect is even bigger than love, because love cannot survive without it. A person who truly loves you honors your decisions, your thinking and your identity. They do not try to remake you or force their own preferences on you.

When you say no, they understand that no. They do not get angry and use it to blackmail you emotionally. Where there is no respect, love cannot breathe for very long.

The fourth is patience and the ability to forgive. Nobody is perfect, and all of us make mistakes. But someone who truly loves you does not hold on to your small errors or turn them into a spectacle. They do not taunt you, and they do not bring up old mistakes again and again to make you feel small.

Instead, they explain things gently, talk it through and give you the chance to move forward. Their goal is not to win the argument. Their goal is to save the relationship.

The fifth is pride and joy in your success. A person who truly cares about you will never be jealous of your achievements. When you reach a goal, small or big, the happiness on their face is something you can see and feel.

They become your biggest cheerleader. They believe in your dreams, especially at the times when you have lost faith in yourself. They see your progress as their own progress.

The sixth is consistency in behavior. Love is not only about showing up on good days. Some people put you on a pedestal one day and act like a stranger the next. A person who truly loves you is not moody in this way. Their attention, care and affection do not change like the weather.

They are the same person today that they were six months or six years ago. There is a steadiness and a trust in their presence, so you do not have to wonder every morning what mood they will be in.

And now the seventh, the most important of all: standing firmly by you in difficult times. When life is happy, the whole world is ready to laugh with you. The real test of love comes when darkness arrives, when you are breaking down financially, physically or emotionally, and when circumstances turn against you.

In those moments, a person who truly loves you holds your hand tighter instead of letting go. They never say, handle your problem yourself. They say, we will face this together. This is why it matters so much. Attention, respect and kind words are easy when life is easy. Only the person who stays when life is hard has shown you what their love is made of.

I should add one honest note. Nobody can give all seven perfectly every single day, and one bad day does not erase love. What matters is the pattern, because a pattern tells the truth that words can hide.

Love is not a word that should be said lightly. It is an action, and it has to be proven again every day. If there is someone in your life who gives you these seven things without being asked, you are among the luckiest people in the world. Value them.

The Seven Lanterns of True Love

(A poem on what real love gives, and what it never pretends)

Love is not thunder, nor a crown of gold,
nor honeyed words that vanish with the dawn.
It is a quiet fire the heart can hold,
a lantern burning after stars are gone.

The first light is a gaze that will not stray;
when all the world grows silent, you are heard.
They set the glittering noise of life away
and drink the meaning from each quiet word.

The second is a harbor, calm and wide,
where you may set your armor on the shore;
no mask to wear, no flaw you have to hide,
only a peace you never knew before.

The third bows low before your sacred name
and honors every border of your soul;
it will not press you into a borrowed frame,
and treats your no as part of being whole.

The fourth is mercy, soft as summer rain,
that will not count your failings like a debt;
it lifts you up to try and try again,
and saves the bond from fury and regret.

The fifth rejoices when your wings unfold,
with not a shade of envy in its eyes;
it lends you faith when yours has turned to cold,
and claims your dawn as light across its skies.

The sixth is steady as the northern star:
no weather in its warmth, no change of tide;
it is the same as yesterday, as far
as years can reach, with you still by its side.

But the seventh is the lantern none can feign,
that only burns when darkness fills the sky;
when you are breaking, drowning in your pain,
it does not turn away or ask you why.
It takes your trembling hand and holds it tight
and says, we face this together, through the night.

So do not seek the fire that dazzles loud
and fades like smoke before the morning’s gold;
seek the one who stays beneath the cloud,
whose love is proven daily, never told.

For love is not a word the lips can say;
it is a vow the soul keeps, day by day.

And if you feel that these things are missing from your relationship, maybe it is time to pause and look again at your own decisions, with honesty and with kindness toward yourself.
